presents | A Miracle Music by Joel Gibb, performed by the
Hidden Cameras
Director: Leif Harmsen
It would be a music video
except it's a film. I shot it in Super
8 in the 1980s as a self portrait with
this guy I was crazy in love
with at the time playing the part of me starting my day
in my bohemian
Yonge Street penthouse. I had renovated that flat
above
Northbound Leather, then Leathercraft, at 606 Yonge in a kind of
imaginary
'40s retro deco complete with roof deck overlooking Toronto's
ground zero. I
later lost it, the coolest 1 bedroom ever, to a
kniving subletting flatmate who
fancied it for himself and is best
forgotten.
I sent the
original reel to the filmers alminac to represent that day
in 1987 to the
world. Digitally remastered from a 3/4" tape
transfer and edited in 2001 at
Trinity Square Video, it's now about
love and loss and sharing the disease, but
then again, it was then
too. I used to go-go dance for the Hidden Cameras when
they were
new, but haven't heard from them in a while, appearently they're
still
active with gigs and recordings.
